Depending on your MacBook Air model, you may already have an SDXC slot. There are many USB SDXC adapters. If you have thunderbolt, you can adapt to Firewire and Firewire camcorders.

I do have a slot on my MacBook Air for a SDXC memory card. I do not (at present) feel the need to use iMovie, but rather archive my videos (a history project) on my 2 TB external hard drive.

Just understand whatever you archive as, it should be a common format that is used by most software like MPEG-4. The other thing to consider is you should always have at least two copies of your data at all times. An archive can fail with time.
Not sure if it was clear, but if you can mount your SDXC memory card, you just drag and drop the movie from the SDXC card to the external disk where you want to archive the file which out converting it.
